Ranveer Allahbadia asked Emraan Hashmi about the worst phase in his life and how it was overcome. He urged the Bollywood star to answer the query “honestly, more like a bhaiya and less like an actor sitting on a podcast.” The 46-year-old actor revealed how everything was going well for him with prospects working, people endorsing his film, and, more importantly, a happy marriage (with Parveen Shahani in 2010) and a happy family. But the divine had other plans for the Hashmi family. He states
I think mere life ka sabse difficult phase wahi tha jab mere bete bimar ho gaye they. 2014, mein. I think no professional upheaval comes even close to that. Aur isko main lafzon mein bhi zahir nahi kar paunga ki kya vo phase tha. Sirf us waqt nahi. Paanch saal tak chala ye.”
Speaking of these trying phases in life, he added, “…it gives you a sense of strength and purpose. Bahut kuch seekha maine us phase se. You find a sense of hope and you wanna cling on to that sense of hope in times when the chips are down.”
Narrating what went down, the actor revealed how one Sunday brunch turned their life upside down.
Ek aisa dhakka laga. Hum kabhi iss cheez ke liye prepare nahi they. Meri life ek afternoon mein badal gai. 13th January (2014) ko hum log gaye they brunch ke liye. Taj Lands End mein pizza kha rahe they mere bete ke saath. Pehla symptom jo hua vo uss table par erupt hua. Us waqt. He excused himself and asked my wife to take him to the loo and he passed blood in his urine. Aur vo pehla symptom tha.
Emraan Hashmi adds,
From that moment on, vo jo ek joyous khushi bhara ek brunch tha agle teen ghante mein hum ek doctor ke clinic mein they. Aur doctor keh raha tha ki aapke bete ko cancer hua hai. Agle din operation fir uske baad chemotherapy.
Speaking about the nature of the cancer on the podcast, the actor told
Aur ye ek esa cancer tha jo generally bachho ko aata hai chaar saal se pehle ka. It’s called Wilms Tumor. Ayaan was 3 years and 11 months old. One month before his birthday. So my whole world flipped in the matter of 12 hours.
