Veteran Bollywood actress turned politician, Jaya Bachchan had made a name for herself with her hard work. She never shies away from expressing her true opinions on the entertainment industry and ongoing issues in the country. Having started her career as an actress with Satyajit Ray directorial Mahanagar (1963), she was last seen on the big screen in Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). Over the decades she has been a part of many projects and even delivered several iconic performances. She recently opened up about her reservations of watching films with a title like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017).

Explaining herself during the India TV conclave, she expressed how she doesn’t have high opinions about recent films like the Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer. Bachchan added that she would never watch a film with such a title. Quoted by the Indian Express, the Sholay actress added, “Just look at the title of the film; I would never go to watch a film with such a name. Yeh koi naam hai? Is that really a name?”

The 76-year-old actress addressed the audience present at the event and asked them if they would be interested in watching a film with such a title. Only a few people raised their hands. Referring to the same, she said. “Among so many people, hardly four people want to watch the film; it’s very sad. Yeh toh flop hai.”
When asked about the narrative of Bollywood films which align with government policies and campaigns, she called them “propaganda films”. She shared that she does endorse them. “In today’s day and age, even political parties are making films, and to discuss all that, we need a lot of time,” she concluded.

For those who don’t remember, released in 2017, the Shree Narayan Singh directorial highlighted the lack of proper toilets in the rural areas of the country. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was declared a box office success after making Rs 300 crore worldwide. It is to be noted that Akshay Kumar has starred in another “propaganda” film, Pad Man (2018), co-starring Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor. The film was based on the lack of knowledge about the health care products for women to use during menstruation.
